Microplastics are present in nearly all types of food, including fish, tea, and even freshly harvested vegetables. Recent studies published in the NPJ Science of Food journal have confirmed their presence in milk as well.

In their analysis of 28 milk and cheese samples, the Padua researchers found that almost all contained microplastic particles. The level of contamination was higher in cheeses than in milk, with aged cheese showing the highest concentration, about 1,857 particles per kilogram. The researchers concluded that these contaminants likely enter dairy products during processing and packaging stages.

This study only confirmed the presence of microplastics in dairy products and did not assess their potential health effects. However, other studies suggest that microplastics can accumulate in the human body, causing inflammation, oxidative stress, and potential cardiovascular and liver issues. Experts recommend taking certain measures in the kitchen to help reduce exposure to microplastics.
